The management of hyperdivergent Class II growth with Eruption Guidance Appliance

RESULTS

Rosa - Before

Class 2 with reduced overjet. The teeth used to stick out from the lips, also known as 'Bunny Teeth' effect.

Rosa - After

Treatment with Shapers gave the patient a smile in harmony with her lips and profile.

Angelo - Before

Class 3 with full arch crossbite. The chin was growing faster than the upper jaw and the lower teeth were covering all the upper teeth.

Angelo - After

Shapers guided the upper and lower jaw to grow proportionally again and transform the crossbite into a normal and healthy bite.

Clemente - Before

Class 2 with deep bite and increased overjet. The lower jaw was growing far too short, causing a concave profile, wrong dental alignment and high muscular tension.

Shapers guided the lower jaw to grow forward and catch up with the upper jaw, giving the patient a correct alignment and a straight profile.

Viola - Before

Class 2 with a deep bite.
The upper teeth were growing too far forward, covering the lower teeth significantly, and causing the upper teeth to stick out from the lips even when at rest.

Viola - After

Shapers allowed to reduce the horizontal distance between the upper and lower teeth and guided the upper teeth to grow vertically again.

Ciro - Before

Anterior crossbite with convex profile. The bottom teeth were growing too forward causing a head to head clash of the front teeth, and leading to a convex profile.

Ciro - After

Treatment with Shapers created enough space between the teeth both horizontally and vertically, also leading the profile towards a correct growth pattern. [Treatment ongoing].

Beatrice - Before

Class 2 with deep bite and 'Gummy Smile'. The upper teeth were inclined forward causing them to fully overlap the bottom teeth and forcing the patient to open their mouth to smile.

Beatrice - After

Shapers redirected the teeth towards a correct inclination and progressively allowed a natural smile and a correct alignment between the upper and lower teeth.

Treatment in the early mixed dentition with the eruption guidance appliance is an effective method to restore normal occlusion and eliminate the need for further orthodontic treatment.

One year treatment effects of the eruption guidance appliance in 7- to 8-year-old children: a randomized clinical trial

In the short term, the EGA seems to be effective in correcting increased overjet and overbite, Class II malocclusion, and lower anterior crowding in the early mixed dentition.

All the analysed works showed great results in the treatment of anterior crowding, increase of the overbite and overjet, both in small deviations of the median line and in minor TMJ problems.

Class II treatment in early mixed dentition with the eruption guidance appliance: effects and long-term stability

A clinically significant correction of the molar relationship, overjet, overbite, incisor alignment, and growth enhancement of the mandible were observed after treatment in early mixed dentition. The treatment results remained largely stable in the early permanent dentition. However, an increase was observed in overbite and lower crowding. None of the children treated in early mixed dentition needed a second treatment phase.

Stability of orthodontic treatment outcomes after 1-year treatment with the eruption guidance appliance in the early mixed dentition: A follow-up study

Early correction of increased overjet, overbite, and class II molar relation with the EGA is maintainable and can also be effective in the permanent dentition, provided the EGA is worn regularly as a retainer.
